Cadillac Fairview announces new Smoke-Free Entranceway Initiative

Important step towards a healthier environment for employees, tenants and guests

Sept. 3, 2009 - In keeping with Cadillac Fairview’s commitment to providing customers with a best in class shopping experience, which includes providing a clean and safe shopping environment, effective September 8, 2009, nine of Cadillac Fairview’s shopping centres throughout Canada will be prohibiting smoking within nine metres of main entrances, excluding restaurant patios where legislation/leases permit.

The smoke-free entranceway initiative was developed in response to concerns from customers having to pass through second-hand smoke when entering/exiting shopping centres. The country-wide initiative is also an important contribution to the company’s national proprietary GREEN AT WORK™ environmental strategy, with additional Cadillac Fairview properties going smoke free in 2010.

“Providing an exceptional shopping experience is extremely important to Cadillac Fairview” says Ron Wratschko, Executive Vice President of Operations. “We believe this is not only the smart thing to do, but the right thing to do for the health of our guests, tenants and employees.”

Cadillac Fairview firmly believes that a person has the right to smoke if they choose; however it does not want that right to infringe on the rights of non-smoking employees, tenants and guests. The nine properties involved will simply be asking those who do smoke, to do so nine metres away from all building entrances.

Both the Canadian Cancer Society and The Lung Association have endorsed Cadillac Fairview’s new smoke-free entranceway program. “We hope that this initiative will prompt other organizations to adopt similar policies in the future, thus protecting all Canadians from exposure to second-hand smoke and discouraging smoking,” said Daniel Demers, Director of Public Issues for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We are always pleased when businesses act as leaders in protecting the public health of Canadians”, said Cameron Bishop, Director of Government Affairs for The Lung Association, “We applaud Cadillac Fairview for taking a strong stand in the fight against smoking and second-hand smoke, and for doing the right thing for their customers.”

As the owner and manager of some of North America’s premier shopping centre’s and office towers Cadillac Fairview is committed to providing all of its employees, tenants and customers with a healthy and welcoming experience as they enter and exit properties.
